The story proceeds calmly till the end. The audience finally recognize what this tuktuk driver and his wife went through during the Khmer Rouge time. Not only the violence, but also “this” must be one of the causes of their trauma for the generation in Cambodia. If the parents are in “this” situation, I assume it may affect their children,too.

In Khmer, “the three wheels” means tuktuk (bike-taxi).

But a Cambodian tuktuk has 4 wheels. (Thai tuktuks have 3 wheels.) After the screening I asked the director the origin of the word, because I thought it could be something philosophical. No one could answer my question.*

This short film won the Youth Jury prize of the Singapore International Film Festival 2015. I hope it will be selected for the screening at the Short Shorts Film Festival in Tokyo this year.

*Of course, cyclos have three wheels and they were replaced by tuktuks (which, if anything, is an onomatopaeic Thai word). Someone else told me later that romoks used to have two wheels at the front and one wheel behind. I doubt whether it is true.

ストーリは穏やかに、最終章まで進んでいく。観客は最後にこのトゥクトゥク運転手と彼の妻がクメール・ルージュの時代を生きてきたのか知ることになる。暴力だけでなく、「このこと」も当時を生きたカンボジアの人々のトラウマの原因になっていると思う。親が「この」状態であれば、子供達にも影響があることは想像できる。

カンボジア語ではトゥクトゥク（バイクタクシー）を「三輪」と呼ぶ。しかしカンボジアのトゥクトゥクは四輪である。（タイのトゥクトゥクは三輪）上映後、もしかしたら何か哲学的な意味があるのか、と思い、私は監督になぜこう呼ぶのか聞いてみた。誰も答えられなかった。

この短編映画は2015年シンガポール国際映画祭でYouth Jury prizeを獲得した。今年の東京でのショート・ショーツ映画祭で上映されることを期待したい。

*確かに「シクロ」は三輪で、トゥクトゥク（＝バイクタクシーでこの名前はタイ語の擬音語／オノマトペ）に取って代わられた。後日、友人から他の乗り物「ラモック」が前輪が二輪で後輪が一輪だった、と聞いたが定かではない。
