I didn’t know that Dr.Haing S.Ngor’s speeches about his (and others') experience through the Khmer Rouge era was so impressive and passionate. I didn’t know about his humanitarian activities, either.
Dr.Haing S.Ngor appeared in the legendary film “The Killing Fields” as Dith Pran and won the Academy Award® for supporting actor. While he was appearing in films as an actor, he was also quite active as a humanitarian. On 25 February 1996, he was murdered. Who killed Dr.Haing S.Ngor is still a mystery. (This film gives an interpretation of the mystery. )
This film explains well the atmosphere and how people were in Phnom Penh before the “Fall of Phnom Penh” through animation, as well as the Khmer Rouge time. It is based on his autobiography. His description of Phnom Penh is similar to my husband’s memory, who was also there at the same time.
After I saw this film in August 2015 in Phnom Penh, I had a chance to meet the director and he told me there was no plan to show this film in Japan yet. I hope it will be shown in Japan. It is important to know about the time “before the Khmer Rouge”. Japan went through the same phase. We became killers during WWII, but before that we were just ordinary people enjoying ordinary life. Not only should we learn what happened during the Khmer Rouge time, but also why they went that way, how the society changed.

Dr.Haing S.Ngor（彼自身だけでなく他のクメール・ルージュ時代の生存者の経験談も含めた）のスピーチがこんなにも感動的で情熱的なものだったとは知らなかった。また彼が人道活動家だとも知らなかった。
Dr.Haing S.Ngorは名作「キリング・フィールド」にMr. Dith Pran役で出演、アカデミー助演男優賞を獲得した。映画に出る傍ら、人道活動家としても活動。1996年2月25日に殺害されたが、実際に誰が本当の黒幕なのかは未だに謎のままだ。（この映画の中では数ある説の中の一説を挙げている。）
この映画は「プノンペン陥落前」の様子をアニメーションを用いて良く表している。（もちろんクメール・ルージュ時代のことも）彼の伝記に基づいて創られている。彼の記述は私の主人（同じ時期にプノンペンに暮らしていた）の記憶と合っている。
