The camera had been following Srey Thy since 2009. It was very interesting to see how she changed from a shy Cambodian girl into one of the most popular divas in the Cambodian rock scene. She didn’t hide how she made her living before she joined the band, or her marriage, or the conflict among her family.
Some colourful animated cartoon sequences with their music are effectively inserted as if the film itself were a very long music video of the Cambodian Space Project’s. I like her original songs, like “Whisky Cambodia”. I enjoyed this film as entertainment.
On the other hand, I felt sorry for Julien, Srey Thy’s husband (or ex-husband) . As an observer, I could predict what would happen between them anyway. Since this film focused on Srey Thy more than Julien, he didn’t have a chance to express what he was thinking about their relationship. I also felt very sorry for Srey Thy’s father. According to the director, she wanted to read the last letter from her mother (which criticised her father harshly) aloud for the filming after her mother’s death. I felt a bit uncomfortable about it because I thought she was using her whole life story to become the heroine of this drama.
I love Cambodian Space Project’s music very much and the concert at “Exchange” in Phnom Penh after the screening of this film was great. I hope they keep going well!
カメラはSrey Thyを2009年以来ずっと追っている。一人のシャイなカンボジア女性がカンボジアン・ロック業界で最も人気があるディーバの一人となる過程が興味深かった。彼女はどのようにバンドに参加する前に生計を立てていたのか、結婚生活、家族との確執を隠すことなく語っている。
カラフルなアニメーションが彼らの音楽と相まって効果的に使われており、Cambodian Space Projectの長編音楽ビデオのようでもあった。私は“Whisky Cambodia”など、彼女のオリジナル曲が好きだし、この映画を娯楽作品として楽しんだ。
一方で、Srey Thyの夫（もしくは元夫）、Julienを気の毒に思った。映画を観る側として、二人に何が起こりうるかは予想可能だった。この映画自体は夫のJulienよりもSrey Thyに焦点を当てていて、彼には二人の関係を語る機会が与えられていない。さらに、Srey Thyの父親も非常に気の毒だと思った。監督によると、彼女は亡くなった母親からの最後の手紙（非常に夫を非難している内容）を、映画内で読み上げたい、と言ったそうだ。まるで彼女が自分の人生をこのドラマのヒロインになるために使っているような気がして、居心地の悪さを感じた。
Cambodian Space Projectの音楽は大好きだし、映画上映の後のプノンペン市内のバー「Exchange」でのライブは素晴らしかった。彼らのこれからの活躍を期待したい。
