I watched this film at Cambodian International Film Festival 2015. The reason why we chose it was to see how this film showed the significant time in Cambodia, before the “Fall of Phnom Penh”. My husband was in Phnom Penh from 1973-April 1975, until one week before the “Fall”. Well…this film needed more research. It doesn’t have the atmosphere of the time, like the legendary film “The Killing Fields”. According to my husband, even though “The Killing Fields” was filmed in Thailand, they recreated the atmosphere of Phnom Penh very well. When he watched it the first time, he got goosebumps because it was so realistic.
It might have been something like Phnom Penh in the late '90s. The American-owned bar was definitely non-existent in Phnom Penh ’75.
I want to give two examples as references. There were no Khmer Rouge soldiers in “black uniforms” coming into Phnom Penh before the fall. And journalists are not supposed to have guns. This is a matter of principle for journalists.
Anyway, this new film is an entertainment and doesn’t need to be perfectly accurate, because it is a fiction. This is an action fantasy film which takes place in a city like Phnom Penh in ’75. The young audience seemed to enjoy it. The music was a little too much, though. Sometimes background music makes a film cheap.
I liked the character acted by Kosal Khiev, the Cambodian-American poet. ( for reference please check my blog about “Cambodian Son”). A little rat reminiscent of Peter Lorre in "Casablanca”, and..well, I shouldn’t write about the ending, should I?
カンボジア国際映画祭2015にて鑑賞。なぜこの映画を見に行ったかというと、あの特別な時代「プノンペン陥落前夜」を描いているということだったからだ。私の夫は1973年～75年4月、プノンペン陥落の1週間前までプノンペンにいた。…この映画製作者はもっと当時のことを調査すべきだった。名作「キリング・フィールド」はタイで撮影されたにも関わらず、映画製作者はとても良く当時のプノンペンの雰囲気を再現して見せた。初めて夫が「キリング・フィールド」を見た時、あまりにリアルだったため鳥肌が立った、と言っている。
参考までに、2点この映画の中から気になった部分を挙げておきたい。プノンペン陥落前に、「黒い制服」を着用したクメール・ルージュ兵はプノンペンに入ってきたことはない。次に、ジャーナリストが銃を持つことはない。これはジャーナリストとしての根本主義だ。
とにかくこの新しい映画は娯楽作で、フィクションなので完全に史実に忠実である必要はない。1975年のプノンペンの「ような」街が舞台となっている、ということだ。若者たちはこの映画を楽しんでいた。ただし、音楽の使い方があまり良くなかった。音楽を下手に使うと、映画自体が安物になってしまう。
Kosal Khievが演じたキャラクターは良かった。（彼については、映画「Cambodian Son」のブログページを参考にしてください。）映画「カサブランカ」のPeter Lorreのような…映画の結末は書いてはならない、ということで。
