I watched this film on Oct. 28th in 2012 at 25th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). I also attended the Q&A session after the screening. It was a rare occasion to hear how the director, Mr.Tea Lim Koun, filmed in the ‘60s and ’70s in Cambodia. He took out some of his reels of film including “Puos Keng Kang” from Cambodia for the screening in Thailand between 1970 to 71, then kept them carefully in Canada. 

The horror folklore story of “Puos Keng Kang” had long been popular in Southeast Asia. It is the most well-known film from the “Golden Age” of Cambodian cinema and there are some remakes. He used many real snakes. The scenes with a girl whose hair was all little snakes was very remarkable. The racy scenes also surprised me. ( I don’t want to write about the story. It will spoil the excitement!) Since it has been digitalized, I hope it is going to be shown in Cambodia someday. 

この映画は2012年10月28日に第25回東京国際映画祭で上映された。上映後のQ&Aセッションにも参加。Tea Lim Koun監督がいかに60年代、70年代に映画を撮ったかを伺う、またとない機会となった。監督は1970年〜71年にかけて何本かの自作フィルムをカンボジアからタイでの上映のため持ち出していた。この「怪奇ヘビ男」はそのうちの1本である。

このホラー民話的なあらすじの映画、「怪奇ヘビ男」は東南アジアでとても人気だった。カンボジア映画黄金期の中でもっとも良く知られた映画である。リメイク版も作られている。撮影において、本物のヘビをたくさん使った。特に髪の毛が全て小さなヘビになった女の子のシーンは印象的だ。少しエロティックなシーンにも驚いた。（ネタバレになるのでストーリは書きません。）デジタル化された、ということで是非、いつかカンボジアで上映してほしい。
