A young Canadian-Cambodian graffiti artist, FONKi, visited Phnom Penh to reunite with his family and meet young Cambodian artists and the hip-hop community. He is a remarkably talented artist. He created a beautiful mural of his family in Phnom Penh during this visit.

The colour footage of his grandparents surprised me. I think it was from the time when they were in the camp at the border and when they went to back their house in Phnom Penh. 

Through Cambodian International Festival 2015, I watched many films related to Cambodia. Some focused on Cambodians who live/lived in other countries. They visit (or are forced to come to) their ancestral Cambodia to find their past and roots. Finding our identities is everybody’s lifelong question, but these foreign-born Cambodians’ struggle was mainly caused by the Khmer Rouge, still continues, and probably will for generations.

カンボジア系カナダ人の若いグラフィティ・アーティスト、FONKiが家族との再会、カンボジアの若手アーティスト達やヒップホップの仲間達に出会うため、カンボジアを訪れる。FONKi自身、とても才能のあるアーティストだ。彼はプノンペンで美しい家族の肖像を壁画に描く。

映画の中に出てくる彼の祖父と祖母のカラー映像に驚いた。おそらくこれらは祖父母が国境の難民キャンプにいた頃のもの、そしてプノンペンに初めて戻った頃の記録映像であると思われる。

2015年カンボジア国際映画祭を通して、カンボジアに関する映画を多く鑑賞した。そのうち何本かは、外国に暮らす（もしくは暮らしていた）カンボジア人に焦点を当てている。彼ら、彼女らが祖国カンボジアを訪れ（場合によっては強制的に送還され）自分たちの過去やルーツを探る。自分のアイデンティティを探すことは誰にとっても人生を通しての問いである。しかし、海外で生まれたカンボジア人たちの苦しみは主にクメール・ルージュが要因であり、今もなお続き、そして世代を超えて続いていく。
