I watched this film which was the first film of the first public screening day of the Cambodian International Film Festival 2015. It started at 9:15 am. I was so moved by Kosal’s poetry that I was crying in the cinema. I’d like to experience his powerful and sensitive poetry recital (or "slam" is a more appropriate word) live someday. He is a Cambodian who grew up in the USA, but because of his criminal record, he was kicked out of the country where all the family live, and sent “back” to Cambodia which he didn’t know much about, even the language. He was an outsider in the USA, and he is an outsider in Cambodia. This is a story of a man struggling to find his identity. His case is extreme, but we all have the same questions in our mind. Who am I ? Where am I going?
The editing of this documentary is also very good. You may wonder who the old man is who appears at the beginning of the film. This is where Kosal's talent comes from.
I hope this film will be shown in cinemas in Japan for a long-term screening. I want people to ask questions: why his family are not living in Cambodia now, why they are separated in USA and France, why he became a criminal, what the USA and Cambodia did to him…through Kosal’s life, we can understand the situation of Cambodia’s past and present a little more clearly. I highly recommend this documentary.

この映画はカンボジア国際映画祭2015の一般公開初日、第1作目として見た。上映開始午前9:15。私はKosalの詩に心打たれて映画館で朝から泣いていた。いつか彼の力強く、かつ繊細な詩の朗読（朗読というよりももっと感情的なものだけれど）を実際に生で体験してみたい。彼はアメリカで育ったカンボジア人だか、犯罪歴のためにカンボジアに強制送還（退去というべきか）されてしまう。彼はカンボジアのことをほとんど知らない。カンボジア語さえも。アメリカでも部外者、カンボジアでも部外者。これはアイデンティティを探し苦しむ一人の人間の話である。彼の場合は特別ケースではあるけれども、私たち、皆が同じ思いを心に持っている。自分とは？私はどこに向かっているのか？
編集も素晴らしい。鑑賞者はこの冒頭に現れる初老の男性は誰なんだろうと思うだろう。彼こそが、Kosalの天から与えられた才能の源である。いつかこの映画が日本で長期上映されることを望みたい。見る人々にいろんな疑問を持って欲しい。なぜKosalの家族はアメリカに暮らしているのか、なぜアメリカとフランスにバラバラなっているのか、なぜKosalが犯罪を犯したのか、アメリカやカンボジアが彼に何をしたか…Kosalの人生を通して、私たちはカンボジアの過去と現在を、もう少し明確に理解できるかもしれない。ぜひ多くの人々に見ていただきたい一本である。
