This is a good and very informative documentary asking who is responsible for the Cambodian tragedy. The film was completed just before the start of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC)’s trial which was supposed to finish within 4 years, but is still underway now in 2016. Pol Pot died long before the shooting of the film. It starts with the funeral of Khieu Ponnary, Pol Pot’s first wife, and ends with that of Ta Mok, who was regarded as "Brother Number Five" or "the Butcher”, but was popular among the people in the area he governed. 

The film contains interviews with Khieu Samphan, former President of Democratic Kampuchea (1976-1979) and Nuon Chea, Brother No.2, before their arrest. Also there is an interview with a French woman, Laurence Picq, who married a Cambodian, Sikoeun, and lived in Cambodia with the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1980.

The leaders of the Khmer Rouge never admit that they directly ordered the mass murder, or they even say they didn’t know about what had happened in S21, Toul Sleng. They were fighting against neighboring countries and America for “good reasons”. They say they did everything for Cambodia. This documentary also shows former King Norodom Sihanouk’s strong influence on the civil war. I also asked myself whether Laurence Picq could have made any effort to stop even a very little part of the tragedy since she was so close to the leaders. (Probably not…) 

The leaders in the past, and also the present, always emphasize there were/are enemies of the country and they were/are protecting it from the enemies at all cost. They don’t admit their responsibility. They try to convince us that they are correct and seek self-justification. I thought the interviews with lower ranking soldiers and ordinary citizens who were not highly educated pointed out the truth. I highly recommend this documentary. 

カンボジアの悲劇の責任は誰になるのかを探求した、情報量の多い、良いドキュメンタリー作品である。カンボジア特別法廷での裁判が始まった頃に製作されている。法廷は予定では4年間で終わるところだったが2016年現在も続いている。撮影開始ずっと前にPol Potはこの世を去っている。映画はPol Potの前妻Khieu Ponnaryの葬儀のシーンから始まり、"Brother Number Five" や”the Butcher”と恐れられた一方、統治していた地域の人々からは人気が高かったTa Mokの葬儀で終わる。

民主カンプチア政権で国家幹部会議長（国家元首1976-79年）だったKhieu Samphanと, Brother No.2と呼ばれたNuon Cheaの逮捕前のインタビュー、さらに、カンボジア人Sikoeunと結婚し、1975年～1980年にクメール・ルージュと行動を共にしたフランス人女性Laurence Picqへのインタビューも含まれる。

クメール・ルージュの指導部は決して自らが大量殺戮を指揮したとは認めない。S21（Toul Sleng収容所）の存在すら知らなかった、と言う。彼らは近隣諸国や米国と大義名分の為に戦っていた。カンボジアのためにできることの全てを行った、と言う。この作品は故・前国王Norodom Sihanoukの内戦中の強い影響力にも触れている。また指導部と近かったフランス人女性Laurence Picqは、ほんの微々たる部分でも、この悲劇の一部を止めることはできなかったのだろうか、と私自身、自問している。

過去の指導者も、現在の指導者も、国益を脅かす敵がいる（いた）と強調する。そして彼らは、いかなることをしてでも、その敵から国を守る（守った）、という。責任は取らない。いかに自分たちが正しいのか、私たちを説得し、保身に走る。下級兵士や一般市民へのインタビューの方が「真理」をついている、と思った。これもお勧めの一本である。

The Burnt Theater (Les artistes du Théâtre Brûlé) (2005)

I was comfortably confused by the mixture of fact and fiction, or real life and stage act. The theater, Preah Suramarit National Theatre, was burnt down in 1994 during renovation efforts, after surviving through the civil war. It was designed by Vann Molyvann, the legendary modern architect, and opened in 1968. It was used for many kinds of performance, such as Cambodian classical dance, music, western stage drama, and so on. 

This film is about the life of the actors, who lost their venue to perform. They are more less living in the burnt theater. Nowhere to go. They eat there, grow vegetables, or catch bats to eat. They sometimes get jobs making Karaoke videos or acting in TV dramas, or working as moto-taxi drivers, even though they were top class actors before. One actress was suffering from trauma. 

The film is very calm, but strong. It doesn’t describe the Khmer Rouge time directly. You can feel it through the conversation between the characters and the atmosphere. You can see what might happen next from the noise of construction. We can understand their anxiety without loud speech, exaggerated expressions, or strong images.

I thought the burnt theater was like a microcosm of the society. People could lose their ordinary life suddenly. Even though people have tried to make their living in these harsh circumstances, there will be more change in the near future. You can hear the new construction (or destruction) noise constantly next door.

This is one of my favorite films by director Rithy Panh. Great actors, too. I highly recommend this film. 

私は、映画を見てノンフィクションとフィクション、現実の生活と芝居の間で心地よく困惑した。Preah Suramarit 国立劇場は内戦を生き延び、1994年の改築工事中に火災に見舞われた。伝説的・現代建築家Vann Molyvannによって設計され1968年に完成した。劇場はカンボジア伝統舞踊、音楽、西洋演劇など様々な公演に利用された。

この映画は演じる舞台を失った役者達の話である。彼らは劇場の中で暮らしている、と言えるだろう。他に行くあてがない。劇場で食事し、野菜を作り、コウモリを採って食べる。トップクラスの役者達であったにもかかわらず、カラオケビデオやテレビドラマに出演し、時にはバイク・タクシーの運転手もする。トラウマに苦しめられている女優もいる。

映画自体は、穏やかで、かつ、力強い。クメール・ルージュの時代を直接的には語らない。映画鑑賞者は登場人物の会話や雰囲気から、その時代を感じ取ることができる。またこの後何が起こりうるか、工事の騒音から読み取ることができる。声高な演説や大仰な表現、強い視覚的イメージは無くとも、彼らの不安感を感じ取ることができる。

この焼け落ちた劇場は、社会の縮図だと思った。日常生活は突然失われる可能性がある。そしてなんとかその厳しい状況の中で生きようとしても、さらなる畝りがすぐそこまで来ている。新たな建設（もしくは破壊）の騒音が、隣から聞こえてくるのだ。

リティ・パン監督の映画の中でも、好きな作品の一つとなった。役者達も素晴らしい。お薦めの一本である。

Lost Loves (2010)

This film received many awards in the Cambodian National Film Festival 2015 (not the international one). I could not watch other films in the national competition, because they changed the screening schedule. It was a great pity. 

It is based on the main actress and her family's experience through 1975 to near the end of the Pol Pot regime. It was well filmed and realistic. My Cambodian friend started crying a few minutes after the film started. 

This film was completed 6 years ago, but since there was no national film competition for 5 years till 2015, the director, Mr. Bora Chhay could not submit it in the competition for a long time. It could have been awarded 6 years ago. I have to say it was a little out of date, even though many Cambodian friends may get mad at me. The usage of the background music was not good, too dramatic and cheap like a TV drama. I know I may get lots of complaints about what I write here, but I have to be honest because I really hope the Cambodian film industry will improve.

この映画は「カンボジア国内映画祭2015」（国際映画祭ではない）にて多くの賞を得た。他のカンボジア国産映画を国内映画祭のスケジュールが変更されたために観れなかったのは残念だ。

主演女優と彼女の家族の1975年からポル・ポト政権崩壊までの経験を綴った作品。よく撮影されリアルだと思った。私のカンボジア人の友人は上映から数分後から泣き始めた。

映画自体は6年前に完成していたが、2015年までカンボジア国内映画祭が開催されず、監督は長い間コンペティションに参加することができなかった。6年前に受賞すべきだった。多くのカンボジア人の友人たちに叱られるだろうが、正直、少し時代遅れである、ということは否めない。BGMの使い方が良くない。あまりにドラマチックで安っぽく、テレビドラマのようだ。こう書くと多くの苦情が来るかもしれないが、カンボジア映画界のさらなる発展のために、あえて正直になりたいと思う。

Last of the Elephant Men (2014)

I could say it was the best film relating to Cambodia in the Cambodian International Film Festival 2015. You must see it on the big screen, because you can experience the magnificent elephant's eyes looking at you. The Bunong indigenous people of Eastern Cambodia worship elephants and live with them. This film is not only about the elephants, but also about environmental problems and the changes in people's lives. 

The Cambodian forests have been destroyed. There is not enough food for the elephants and and people need more income, so they have to sell their elephants. The last man who could listen to the voice of the elephants was very impressive. His eyes could read an elephant's mind. 

I can't say that it is totally and purely documentary, because the scene where younger villagers visited the elephant man to ask him to organize the special ceremony could have been staged. (I don't know but I felt so.) However I believe that the elephant man really could converse with elephants. His eyes and appearance were very convincing. 

I hope this film will be shown worldwide, because the people appearing in it are fighting against government and companies over this huge environmental issue.They will need protection, and worldwide recognition may support them.

It is a great loss that there is no-one who can listen to elephants in the village anymore. We are fortunate that they filmed the last of the elephant men.

I highly recommend this film!

カンボジア国際映画祭2015のカンボジアに関する映画の中で一番良い映画だったと思う。雄大な象の目に見つめられる、という雰囲気を味わっていただくためにも、大画面での視聴をお勧めしたい。ブノン族はカンボジアの東の地方の、象を崇め、象と一緒に暮らす民族だ。この作品は単なる象の話ではなく、環境問題と人々の生活の変化についての映画である。

カンボジアの森は破壊されている。象に必要な食料も無くなり、人々は収入を得るために象を売る。この象の声を聞くことができる「最後の男」が非常に印象的だ。彼の目は、象の気持ちを読み解くことができる。

この映画を完全に純粋なドキュメンタリー映画と呼んで良いかは、判断できない。若い村人が「最後の男」に象のための祈祷を行って欲しいと頼みに来たシーンは演出されているのではないか、と思えた。（実際はわからないが、私にはそういう風に見えた。）しかしながら、本当に「最後の男」は象と会話ができたのではないかと信じている。彼の目や風貌には実に説得力がある。

この映画が世界中で上映されるよう願っている。なぜなら登場する人々がこの重大な環境問題に関して政府や企業と闘っているからだ。彼らは保護されなければならない。世界の目が彼らを支援できるかもしれない。

もう村の誰も象と会話ができないというのは、大変な喪失だ。こうして「最後の男」を映画の中に残すことができたのはラッキーなことである。お勧めの１本だ。

Rare Archives From Cambodia (Cambodian International Film Festival edition) (1928 - 1947)

This is footage by French filmmakers in Cambodia filmed between 1928 and 1947. Very rare images of Cambodia. I particularly liked the footage of Angkor with the beautiful elephants. The narration is so fast and poetic that I heard even my French friend could not follow everything. I think it is now in Bophana Center's archives. It is worth seeing!

1928年から1947年にフランス人に撮影された、大変貴重なカンボジアを写した動画である。特にアンコール遺跡と美しい象の場面は印象的だ。オリジナルのナレーションがあまりに早口で詩的なため、フランス人の友人ですら全てを聞き取れなかった。おそらく現在プノンペンのBophana Centerのアーカイブに所蔵されていると思うので、機会があれば是非ご覧いただきたい。

One Dollar - A series of short documentaries (2013-

A series of short documentaries produced by young Cambodian film makers trained at Bophana Center which was founded by Mr.Rithy Panh (and also supported by Cambodian Film Committee)  They are all on the Internet, so please check them out. There are 14 films so far, and they are working on more. 

They are all good and tell us about the struggles of the people who can earn only about one dollar per day. Many of them are desperate and the people in the films complain how difficult their lives are, of course. My favorite one is still the first film that appeared on the web site. "Minister of Papaya" is about the life of a young papaya pickles seller who can earn little money, but there is hope in this film. 

If you keep sighing all the time, good fortune escapes you. It is important to show how hard their life is and all sorts of problems in society, but films can also tell the world how Cambodians are full of energy, passion and ideas. I hope there will be more short documentaries with different points of view coming out.

リティ・パン監督が立ち上げたカンボジア・プノンペンにある映像アーカイブセンター、Bophana Centerで学ぶ若手映画製作者によって作られた短編映画集。（カンボジア映画委員会のサポートも受けている）全ての作品がインターネットで配信されているので、ぜひ観ていただきたい。現在のところ14作品が公開されていて、現在も政策が続けられている。

これらの作品は1日約１ドルくらいの収入で生きる人々の辛い生活の様子を知らせてくれる。言うまでもなく、絶望的な生活の中、作品の多くの登場人物たちはいかに自分たちの生活が苦しいかを訴える。私の一番好きな作品は、いまだに一番最初に配信された第1作目だ。「パパイア大臣」は若いパパイアの漬物売りの話で、彼もわずかの収入しか得られないが、この作品には希望を感じることができる。

溜息をつき続けると、幸運が逃げてしまう。いかに厳しい生活を彼らが送っているのかや、全ての社会的問題に焦点を当てるのは大事なことである。反面、映画作品によって、いかにカンボジア人がエネルギッシュで情熱を持っていて、アイデア豊富な人々なのか、世界に知らせることもできる。今後、もっと違った角度からも捉えられたドキュメンタリー作品が制作されることを期待したい。
