A well filmed documentary about Khun Srun, Cambodian writer, through his works and eyes of his surviving daughter. Khun Srun was a high school mathematics teacher and a member of the Ministry of Education’s textbook editorial committee, and then joined the revolutionary guerillas in 1973. I think his poems  express the feeling of well-educated youth in the ’60s and ’70s. Also his poems predicted the events of the future, which is today. After joining the Khmer Rouge, he was executed  in 1978. What triggered him to be so disappointed and to join the revolution? What did he think after joining the Khmer Rouge? We will never be able to know, since he stopped writing after he went into the jungle. Narration was done by a very good Cambodian actor. His calm intelligent voice made this film realistic. Khun Srun’s daughter’s life is also twisted as one of the family of a Khmer Rouge member. 

According to the director, there are some translated books of Khun Srun’s works in French and one book in Japanese. I found it, so I will read his poems when I get it in my hand. 

This documentary was one of the best films in the Cambodian International Film Festival 2015. Highly recommended, especially for young Cambodians.

カンボジア人詩人・作家Khun Srunを、彼の作品と生き残った彼の娘の目を通して追った良作。Khun Srunは高校の数学教師であり、教育省の教科書選定委員でもあったが、1973年に革命派ゲリラとして身を投じる。彼の作品は60年、70年代の高学歴の若者達の気持ちを代弁していると思う。そして彼の作品は現代の社会をも予見している。実際に何が彼をそれほどまでに失望させ、クメール・ルージュに入らせたのか？革命派に身を投じた後、彼が何を思ったか？ジャングルに入り、筆を追った彼の思いを知るすべはない。映画のナレーション（詩の朗読）はとても良いカンボジア人俳優によって読まれている。彼の知的な声がこの映画に真実味を与えている。Khun Srunの娘の人生もクメール・ルージュの家族ということで、いろいろな苦労を重ねてきた。

この映画はカンボジア国際映画祭2015で上映された作品の中でも特に優れた１本で、ぜひ、カンボジアの若者達に見ていただきたい。

監督によるとフランス語に訳されたKhun Srunの作品が数冊、また日本語に訳されたものが１冊あるとのことで、後日、その本を見つけることができた。入手次第、すぐ読んでみたいと思う。

NICE HATS! : 5 Enigmas in the Life of Cambodia (2006)

It is a kind of eye-opening film about Cambodians’ hats and head decorating items, such as Krama (traditional scarf), palm leaf hand-made hats, the king's crown, and hair accessories of traditional dancers. I’ve noticed many Cambodian people wear nice hats and I’ve seen colourfully designed hats sold at the markets, but I didn’t think about the connection with their history or culture. Unfortunately (but fortunately for traffic safety) nowadays people have to wear crash helmets on motorbikes, so we don’t see so many nice hats on the road in the cities anymore, but I think people still have their favorite hats. The interviews are very interesting, and Mr. Rithy Panh’s words are perceptive and very moving. I will recommend my friends to see this film when it is shown.

この映画は、ある意味においてカンボジアの伝統的スカーフ、クロマーやヤシの葉の帽子、国王の王冠、伝統舞踊家の頭飾りなど「カンボジアの帽子、頭を飾る装飾品」について新しい視点を与えてくれる。これまでにもカンボジア人が格好良く帽子を被っているのや、市場でカラフルな帽子が山積みにされて売られているのを見かけてはいたが、その文化的、歴史的背景に思いを巡らせることはなかった。残念ながら（交通安全の面からは良いことなのだが）、モータバイク運転時のヘルメット着用が義務付けられ、都市部ではそれほど多くの帽子を被った人々を見かけなくなった。おそらくみんな個人個人、お気に入りの帽子を持っているだろうけれど。映画内の各インタビューはとても興味深い。特にリティ・パン監督の言葉は明敏かつ視覚的でとても感動した。また上映の機会があれば、友人たちに勧めたい映画である。

"BOPHA ANGKOR" (1972)

Filmed in 1972, during the "Golden Age of Cambodian Film" and the civil war between Lon Nol regime and Khmer Rouge, featuring one of the most famous Cambodian actresses, Dy Saveth. 

A beautiful young Cambodian doctor falls love with a journalist from Hong Kong. It includes daring scenes (kissing scenes, a naked woman swimming, etc.) for the time and scenes from real encounters between Khmer Rouge and Lon Nol’s army. Original Cambodian language version has been lost and only the Chinese-dubbed version was discovered. The image shown in the cinema was not clear and English subtitles were very difficult to read, but the story was simple to follow. In a way, this film predicted what would happen in Cambodia after 1975 under the Pol Pot regime. It is valuable as an important archive piece to know the atmosphere and people’s life in Phnom Penh in '72.

美しいカンボジア人女医が香港から来たジャーナリストと恋に落ちる。当時としては斬新なシーン（キスシーンや裸の女性が泳ぐなど）や、実際のロン・ノル軍とクメールルージュの交戦シーンが含まれている。オリジナルのカンボジア語の音声は失われていて、中国語吹き替えバージョンしか残っていない。画像は荒く、英語字幕もとても読み難いが、ストーリはシンプルなので、理解できる。ある意味、この後カンボジアでポル・ポト政権下で起きることを予測している映画とも言える。当時1972年のプノンペンの人々の暮らしや風潮を知る上でアーカイブ資料としても価値あり。
