Human trafficking is the one of the big issues in Cambodia. Not only women and children, but also men are forced to work as slaves. This documentary film follows a tycoon who convinces and promises people (as he himself believes) a better life, but what he is doing is human trafficking. I was astonished he accepted to be interviewed and didn’t care about it so much because he was too busy with his business. 

A poor mother sold her daughter, and blames the daughter for coming back to her village with a baby, after she was raped and got pregnant, because this mother no longer gets money from her daughter and now needs to feed 2 more people. I know their life is tough and they need money, but I felt really angry about this mother who sold her daughter. She has no respect for human rights. 

A woman who became an agent for this human-trafficking tycoon regrets what she did. A father regrets that he couldn’t prevent his daughter being sold. Still, many young Cambodian villagers visit this tycoon’s office dreaming of a new and better life. And the tycoon himself has converted to Christianity and prays to God for a better life. (I think he is afraid of Karma, like Duch who was the prison commandant of S-21, where so many people were killed under the Pol Pot regime. He also converted to Christianity.) 

This documentary film has been shown in other countries, and got awards, but it is banned in Cambodia. It shows how the government is involved in this issue.I got permission from the co-director of this film to write about it, since I was afraid they could be prosecuted by police on the government’s side. On the other hand, I thought I should write about it and ask as many people as possible to watch this film. We shouldn’t ignore the dark side of Cambodia. It's a very strong and well made documentary film. Must see.


人身売買はカンボジアにおいて大きな問題となっている。女性、子供だけでなく男性も奴隷として強制労働させられているケースがある。このドキュメンタリーは人々により良い生活が待っている信用させ、実際には人身売買を行っている大立者（仲介業者）を追いかけている。彼がインタビューを受け映画に登場することを許諾し、かつ忙しさゆえに映画のことを気にもかけていない、ということに驚いた。貧しい母が娘を売り、そしてレイプされ、妊娠し、村へ帰ってきた娘を邪険に扱う。娘がもう金を稼がない上に、子供の食扶持まで増えてしまったからだ。確かに、生活が苦しく、金が必要なのはわかるが、この母親に対して強い憤りを感じだ。まったく人権を尊重していない。

人身売買の手先となった女性は、自分がしたことを悔やむ。娘が売られていくことを止められなかった父親も悔やむ。それでも多くのカンボジアの若者達が、この仲介業者のオフィスに新しいより良い暮らしを求めて訪ねてくる。この男自身、キリスト教に改宗し、自身のより良い生活を神に祈る。（私は、この男も「カルマ（輪廻）」を恐れていると思う。あのポスポト政権下で多くの人々が殺されたS21収容所の所長のDuchのように。Duchもまたキリスト教に改宗した。）

このドキュメンタリーは多くの国々で上映され、賞を得ている。しかし、カンボジア国内の一般上映は禁止されている。このこと自体、政府がこの問題に関わっているのでは、ということを垣間見せている。今回、共同制作者から許可を得て、この映画について書くことにした。製作陣が政府側の警察に追求されたりするかもしれないからだ。一方で、できるだけお多くの人々にこの映画を見てもらうためにも、書かねばならない、と思った。我々は、カンボジアの闇を無視してはならない。とてもよくできた力強い作品である。ぜひ、見ていただきたい。

The colour. As a foreigner living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, I am always astonished by the colour of this city. People’s clothes, hats, motorbikes and so on. Another thing is noise. The noise of construction, traffic, loud music.. There is no quiet space in this city. 

I am from the countryside of Japan. I moved to Tokyo when I was 18. I lost myself in the gigantic metropolis, got confused, made bad decisions and did quite stupid things. The city was and is full of young people like me. They struggle to keep their identity. 

The characters in “Diamond Island” don’t talk much; however, the audience can imagine the background of each of the characters. Director Davy Chou notices very little details in people’s ordinary lives and inputs the images in his mind, digests them, then sublimates what he saw into the art form. 

Each character of this film has his or her own symbolic colour. Some keep their colour, some lose it, as if they lose their identity in the modern society. The new town, “Diamond Island” gets bigger and uglier by absorbing people’s dreams and desires. All the actors are great even though they had had no experience as actors. Davy has amazing eagle eyes to find them on the street. 

I truly love this film and hope many Cambodians will watch this film in the cinema. I highly recommend it. 


色彩。私自身、カンボジアのプノンペンに暮らす外国人として、この街の色彩にいつも驚かされる。人々の服の色、帽子、バイク、など。もう一つは騒音。工事の音、道路の騒音、大音量の音楽…この街には静寂な場所が無い。

私も日本の田舎の出身だ。１８歳の時に上京した。私も巨大なメトロポリスの中で困惑し、間違った決断をし、バカなことをやってきた。東京には私のような若者で溢れていたし、今も溢れている。彼らは自身のアンデンティティを守るのに苦しむ。

「ダイアモンド・アイランド」の登場人物はあまり語らない。しかし、観客は登場人物の背景、人生をイメージすることができる。監督Davy Chouは人々の日常生活の繊細な物事に気付き、そのイメージを取り込み、消化し、自分が見たものを芸術の域に昇華する。

そろぞれの登場人物は、それぞれに象徴的な色を持っている。現代社会の中で失ってしまう個人のアイデンティティのように、その色を保つ者もいれば、そして失ってしまう者もいる。新興地域「ダイアモンド・アイランド」は人々の夢と欲望を喰らい、さらに大きく、さらに醜くなっていく。演技未経験だった俳優たちが素晴らしい。Davyはこれらの演者たちを街中で見つけ出す、素晴らしい嗅覚の持ち主だ。

これは私のお気に入りの一本となった。是非、多くのカンボジア人に是非見て欲しいと思う。
