A good full-length feature film. I thought some scenes could have been edited out at the beginning of the film, such as the motorbike chase, but toward the end, the pacing got better and the story got deeper. There are some twists and I was quite moved at the end. Probably a few action  needed for the Cambodian audience. 

Each person has his/her stories behind their history. All the survivors' experiences are like film or novel stories. Some people will never be able to tell us what happened to them because of their pain. This film is fiction, but based on historical events. I don’t know if there were functioning cinemas at the Fall of Phnom Penh in 1975. I heard they were closed long before the fall. But the details are not so important in this film's case. It depicts the atmosphere well, and it is the story of people's decisions for survival in a heavy current which no one could swim against. 

I was a bit confused since the main character's father looked so much younger than her mother. There were children or young Khmer Rouge soldiers guarding the labour camps under the Pol Pot regime. The father could have been one of them. I can't write more about this marriage here because it’s one of the key elements of the script. 

The actress Dy Saveth, who appeared as the mother of the main character, has the presence of "the star". All the actors are good, especially, Rous Mony, who received the best actor's award at the Cambodian International Film Festival 2015. The cinematography was good, too. 

This film is going to be screened in Tokyo from July, 2016. (The Japanese title is “Theater Phnom Penh”.) 

良作。冒頭部分は何箇所かカットしても良いのではないか、と思われる部分（オートバイでのチェイスシーンなど）もあるが、終盤に向かってペースも良くなり、話も深くなって行き、絡み合った人間関係もあり、感動した。おそらく多少のアクションシーンはカンボジアの観客には必要だったのかもしれない。

歴史の裏で、人それぞれに人生の物語がある。生き残った全ての人々の経験は、まさに映画のようである。そして痛みのために自らの経験を話すことができない人もいる。この映画は史実からアイデアを得たフィクションである。実際に1975年のプノンペン陥落時にまだ機能していた映画館があったかどうかはわからない。聞いた話では、陥落の随分前から映画館は閉館されていたそうだ。しかし、こう言った詳細はこの映画に関して言えばそれほどの問題にはならない。当時の空気感をよく捉えた、逆らうことのできない大きなうねりの中で生き残るための決断を下した人々の物語である。

主人公の父親が母親よりも随分と若く見えるので、少し話を追うのに混乱した。当時、子供や若者がポル・ポト政権下で収容所の監視をしていたことを考えると、この父親もそう言った監視員の一人だったのかもしれない。この婚姻に関しては映画のストーリーの重要部分になるので、ここでは書かないでおこうと思う。

主人公の母親を演じたDy Savethには、スターとしての貫禄がみなぎっている。全ての役者が良く、特に2015年カンボジア国際映画祭で最優秀俳優賞を得たRous Monyが良かった。撮影技術も素晴らしい。

この映画は2016年7月から東京で上映される。邦題は「シアター・プノンペン」。

12 Sisters’ Story (Puthisen Neang Kong Rey) (1968)

It was shown at the screening at Yebisu Eizosai (Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Vision) in Ebisu, Tokyo on February 16th, 2016. (Another screening was on the 18th.) Unfortunately, the negative and movie film with the original Cambodian sound were lost. This digitalized film dubbed in Thai was somehow found by the director's son in Canada. Further research on why and how this dubbed version survived will be needed. There is a Khmer language version copied to VHS, in which the screen size was changed and which is 8 minutes shorter than the only existing movie film shown in Ebisu, Tokyo.

As Mr. Suzuki mentioned at the Q&A session after screening, this film was "made by Cambodians for Cambodians." It is based on a folk story which is very well known among the Cambodian people. Therefore no explanation was necessary, and the story itself was simple. There are some nonsense scenes, but it would not matter to Cambodians. The special effects, especially the scene with "the earthquake" were very well done.  I can imagine how the audience was excited watching the special effects at that time. The colour was vivid. They could shoot the film using Angkor Wat as the king's palace. The music from “Psycho” and  “Also Sprach Zarathustra' Einleitung (from “2001: A Space Odyssey” ) were included. 

I thought there were quite many unnaturally edited parts. Scenes were cut suddenly. I wonder if it was edited like that when the Thai dubbed version was made or if it was edited by the director himself for the original version. This Thai dubbed version was copied probably in 1983 or '84. It was in good condition, yet colour adjusting was needed for some parts. It seems no scene was edited out when this Thai dubbed version copy was made. 

It was made about 50 years ago, so memories and information about the film are fading. Even the director doesn't remember clearly. And the audience’s attitudes also changed. In Tokyo the audience laughed when the giant woman appeared at the beginning, but didn’t when some other special effects appeared. On the other hand, I heard from my husband who attended the screening with the VHS copied version with Cambodian sound at Bophana Center in Phnom Penh on Feb.17th, 2016 , that the Cambodian viewers laughed at them (even though the director was there…) It seems that the VHS copied version will be shown in the near future at a cinema in Phnom Penh, so I will go to see it again to compare it with the Thai dubbed version and the reaction from the local people. 

恵比寿映像祭にて2106年2月16日（18日にも上映）上映。残念ながら映画のネガとオリジナルのカンボジア語音声付きの映画フィルムは失われている。このタイ語に吹き替えられた上映用フィルムは監督のご子息が見つけたそうだ。（見つけた経緯はわからない）このタイ語吹き替え版がどのように残ったのかは、さらなる調査が必要なのだろうと思う。VHSにダビングされたカンボジア語版は存在していているが、画面サイズが変更され、恵比寿で上映されたものよりも8分短いとのことである。

この映画は「カンボジア人によって作られた、カンボジア人のための映画」であると思う。カンボジア人によく知られた民話を題材にしている。そのため、内容の説明はなされず、かつ話自体はシンプルなものである。ところどころナンセンスだ、と思える場面があるが、カンボジア人にとっては問題にならないのだろう。特殊効果、特に「地震」のシーンはとてもよく作られていると思う。当時の観客がどんなに興奮してみていただろうかと想像できる。色が鮮やかで、アンコール・ワットを王様の宮殿として使っている。映画「サイコ」の映画音楽や「2001年宇宙の旅」の「ツァラトゥストラはかく語りき」が挿入されている。

突然の不自然なカットシーンが散見され、タイ語吹き替え版が作られた時にこうなったのか、元から監督がこのように編集したのか気になるところだ。このタイ語吹き替え版はおそらく1983年か84年に作られたそうで、多少、色校正が必要な部分があったものの、物の状態は良かったそうである。タイ語吹き替え版の複製が作られた時には編集は行われなかったのでは、とのことだった。

50年前の製作である。記憶も情報も薄れていく。監督ご自身も明確には覚えていないようだ。そして観客も変わった。東京での上映では、冒頭に巨人の女が現れた時に笑いが出たが、特撮に関しては笑うことはなかった。一方で、2016年2月17日にプノンペンのBophana Centerで行われたVHS複製カンボジア語版の上映会では、参加した私の主人によると、カンボジア人の観客から特撮シーンで笑いが出たそうだ。（監督ご自身が出席されているにもかかわらず…）VHS複製版は今後、プノンペンの映画館で上映されるとのことなので、もう一度見に行って、タイ語吹き替え版との違い、観客の反応の違いを確かめたいと思う。
